국가유산청 궁능유적본부(본부장 이재필)는 국가유산진흥원(원장 최영창)과 함께 오는 10월 9일부터 13일까지 5일간 서울의 4대 고궁(경복궁·창덕궁·창경궁·덕수궁)에서 「2024 가을 궁중문화축전」을 개최한다.

올해 10주년을 맞은 「궁중문화축전」은 아름다운 고궁에서 다양한 전통문화를 즐길 수 있는 국내 최대 문화유산 축제로, 봄과 가을에 열린다. 지난 5월에 열린 「봄 궁중문화축전」에는 60만 명의 국내외 관람객이 방문하여 큰 사랑을 받았다.

이번 「가을 궁중문화축전」에서는 한글날과 주말을 맞이하여 고궁을 방문한 관람객들이 우리의 한복생활과 전통문화를 체험할 수 있도록 한복 체험과 강연, 전시 등의 다양한 국민 참여형 프로그램을 선보인다.

▲ 경복궁에서는 주 행사로 한복 특화 프로그램을 중심으로 한 대국민 한복 캠페인을 진행한다. 먼저, 왕실 가족이 궁궐을 산책하는 모습을 재현한 ‘왕가의 산책’을 비롯한 국악 공연, 체험 등 다양한 한복 문화콘텐츠를 경복궁의 밤 정취와 함께 즐길 수 있는 ‘경복궁 한복 연향’(10.9.)을 개최한다. 한복을 착용한 관람객은 연향에 무료로 입장할 수 있으며, 사전예약자에게는 소정의 기념품도 증정한다. 또한, 한복 소품 만들기, 한복 디지털 캐리커처 등 각종 한복 체험 프로그램도 사전 예약 및 현장 접수를 통해 참가할 수 있다.

이와 함께, 조선시대 상의원을 주제로 조성된 ‘수정전’에서 한복의 역사를 살펴보고 한복 소품을 제작해 볼 수 있는 ‘경복궁 상의원(10.9.~10.13, 수정전 및 융무루 터)’, 영화와 의궤 속 한복의 쓰임새를 주제로 한 ‘인문학 콘서트-한복, 천태만상(10.10.~10.11, 흥복전)’이 열린다. 궁궐 속 한복 사진 공모전의 수상작을 관람할 수 있는 ‘고궁 속 아름다운 한복 이야기(10.9.~10.13, 계조당)’ 전시와 한복을 입고 온 관람객을 대상으로 ‘한복 베스트 드레서 선발 이벤트(10.9.~10.13, 4대 고궁 전역)’도 운영되어 우리 한복을 더욱 깊이 있게 경험하고 즐기는 축전이 될 것으로 기대된다.

한편, 지난 2022년 첫 선을 보인 ‘고궁음악회-발레×수제천(10.10.~10.13, 집옥재)’도 더욱 풍성하게 찾아온다. 발레와 궁중음악을 접목한 융합(크로스오버, Crossover) 공연으로 호평을 받아온 ‘발레×수제천’은 「2023 가을 궁중문화축전」 대비 관람 인원(600명→650명)과 관람 횟수(3회→4회)를 늘리고, 외국인 전용 좌석을 추가하여 보다 많은 이들이 즐길 수 있도록 기획했다.(내외국인 모두 사전 예약 필요)

▲ 창덕궁에서는 ‘아침 궁을 깨우다(10.9.~10.13.)’ 프로그램이 지난 봄 궁중문화축전에서의 인기에 힘입어 가을에도 진행된다. 이시우 작가와 안지영 역사 해설가가 들려주는 창덕궁 이야기와 함께 고요한 아침의 창덕궁을 산책하는 경험을 할 수 있다.

▲ 창경궁에서는 ‘복사꽃, 생각하니 슬프다(10.11.~10.13, 명정전)’ 공연이 열린다. 영조와 사도세자(추존 장조), 정조, 혜경궁(헌경황후) 홍씨의 이야기를 다룬 창작극으로, 작품 속 실제 배경인 창경궁에서 펼쳐져 더욱 특별한 공연이 될 것으로 기대된다.
더불어, 밤의 춘당지를 수놓는 미디어아트 프로그램 ‘창경궁 물빛연화(10.9.~10.13.)’와 통명전에서 펼쳐지는 고궁음악회-풍류에 클래식을 더하다(10.9.~10.12.)’ 등 별도의 예약 없이 즐기는 프로그램도 다양하게 마련된다.

▲ 온라인으로 즐길 수 있는 궁중문화축전도 진행된다. 온라인상에서 조선시대 캐릭터를 공유할 수 있어 지난해 약 20만 명이나 참여했던 ‘모두의 풍속도(9.13.~10.27.)’가 올해는 ‘한복 연향’을 주제로 다시 찾아온다. 모두의 풍속도 누리집(pungsokdo.com) 통해 누구나 쉽게 한복을 입은 나만의 조선시대 캐릭터를 만들고 공유할 수 있다.

「궁중문화축전」의 사전 예약 프로그램은 오는 23일 오후 12시부터 티켓링크(www.ticketlink.co.kr)를 통해 선착순으로 진행되는데, ‘경복궁 상의원’ 체험의 일부, ‘고궁음악회-발레×수제천’, ‘아침 궁을 깨우다’, ‘복사꽃, 생각하니 슬프다’는 유료 프로그램으로 사전 예약이 필요하다. ‘경복궁 한복 연향’, ‘인문학 콘서트-한복, 천태만상’은 사전 예약과 현장 참여가 모두 가능하며, 무료로 즐길 수 있다.

또한, 이번 「궁중문화축전」 기간 동안 여러 프로그램이 준비되는 4대궁을 포함하여 경희궁과 종묘까지 모두 무제한으로 입장할 수 있는 특별 관람권인 ‘궁패스’도 4천 장 한정 판매된다. 이번 궁패스 구매자들에게는 축전 기간 중 사용할 수 있는 ‘경복궁 야간관람권(1회)’의 혜택도 제공된다.

한편, 9월 20일부터 10월 13일까지 이번「2024 가을 궁중문화축전」을 소개하는 20초 내외의 축전 홍보 영상이 서울 종로구의 협조로 광화문 일대 주요 옥외전광판들을 통해 송출될 예정이다. 또한, 내년에는 축전 소개 외에 더 다양한 국가유산들을 소개하는 홍보 영상들을 서울 중구와 종로구의 주요 옥외전광판을 통해 송출할 계획이다.

국가유산청 궁능유적본부는 「궁중문화축전」을 통해 국내외의 다양한 관람객들이 우리 국가유산에 깃든 역사와 전통을 즐겁게 체험하고 깨닫는 기회가 되기를 기대하며, 앞으로도 참신한 궁능 활용 프로그램을 선보이는 적극행정을 지속해나갈 것이다.

The Korea Heritage Service’s Royal Palaces and Tombs Center, in collaboration with the Korea Heritage Agency, will host the 2024 K-Royal Culture Festival - Fall Edition from October 9 to 13 at Seoul’s four royal palaces: Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, and Deoksugung.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the K-Royal Culture Festival is the largest cultural heritage festival in Korea, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in traditional culture within the beautiful settings of the royal palaces. Held biannually in spring and fall, this year’s Spring Festival attracted over 600,000 domestic and international visitors.

This year’s Fall Festival, coinciding with Hangeul Day (a national holiday celebrating the creation of the Korean alphabet ‘Hangeul’) and the weekend, visitors can enjoy Hanbok experiences, lectures, exhibitions, and various interactive programs.

▲ At Gyeongbokgung, various Hanbok-themed programs will be held as the main event for the nationwide campaign for promoting Korean traditional clothing. The "Walking of Royal Family," a reenactment of the royal family strolling through the palace, will be featured, along with various Hanbok-related cultural contents including Gugak (traditional Korean music) performances, all of which can be enjoyed amidst the evening ambiance of the palace during the “Hanbok Royal Banquet” on October 9. Visitors wearing Hanbok can enter the banquet free of charge, and advance reservation participants will receive a special gift. Additionally, various experience programs such as Hanbok accessory crafting and Hanbok digital caricatures can be joined through advance reservations or on-site registration.

Additionally, the Royal Tailor (Sanguiwon*) event at Gyeongbokgung will run from October 9-13 at Sujeongjeon Hall and Yungmuru Site, offering visitors the chance to explore the history of Hanbok and create Hanbok accessories. The Humanities Concert: Hanboks Worlds Apart, scheduled for October 10-11 at Heungbokjeon Hall, will explore the significance of Hanbok in historical films and documents. Furthermore, the exhibition Beautiful Hanbok Stories in K-Royal Palaces will showcase award-winning photographs of Hanbok from October 9-13 at Gyejodang Hall. The Hanbok Best Dresser Showcase, running from October 9-13 across all four palaces, will offer visitors a fully immersive Hanbok experience. Visitors can learn more about its role in preserving Hanbok culture.
* The term "Sanguiwon" refers to the department responsible for managing royal clothing and daily items in the Joseon Dynasty.

The Palace Concert : Ballet x Sujecheon , which was first introduced in 2022, will return with an expanded program from October 10 to 13 at Jibokjae Hall. This crossover performance combining ballet and court music has received high praise, and for the fall festival, the audience capacity per session has been increased from 600 to 650 people, and the number of performances from 3 to 4 compared to the numbers of last year’s festival. Additionally, seats specifically for international visitors have been added to ensure more people can enjoy the performance (advance reservation required for both Korean and foreign participants).

▲ At Changdeokgung, the popular Awakening the Morning Palace program, which was a hit during the spring festival, will return this fall from October 9-13. Visitors can take a peaceful morning stroll through the palace grounds, guided by the captivating stories of artist Lee Si-woo and historian Ahn Ji-young.

▲ Changgyeonggung will host a special performance titled Peach Blossom: A Sorrowful Scene from October 11-13 at Myeongjeongjeon Hall. This original play, set in Changgyeonggung, explores historical figures such as King Yeongjo, Crown Prince Sado, King Jeongjo, and Lady Hyegyeong of the Pungsan Hong clan (Queen Heongyeong), creating a unique and emotional experience for the audience.

Visitors can also experience the Changgyeonggung Moonlight Lotus Show, a media art display set against the backdrop of Chundangji Pond, from October 9-13, and the Palace Concert: Classical Meets Pungryu at Tongmyeongjeon Hall from October 9-12. These events are open to the public without reservations.

▲ For those unable to attend in person, the K-Royal Culture Festival will also offer online programs. Last year’s Genre Painting for All, which attracted online around 200,000 participants, returns under the theme Hanbok Royal Banquet from September 13 to October 27. Participants can create and share their own Hanbok-clad Joseon Dynasty characters on the Genre Painting for All website (pungsokdo.com).

Reservations for the 2024 K-Royal Culture Festival - Fall Edition will open at 12 p.m. on September 23 through Ticketlink (www.ticketlink.co.kr) on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs requiring prior reservations include parts of the Royal Tailor of Gyeongbokgung, Palace Concert : Ballet × Sujecheon, Awakening the Morning Palace, and Peach Blossom: A Sorrowful Scene. Free programs such as the Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Royal Banquet and the Humanities Concert: Hanboks Worlds Apart can be reserved in advance, with on-site registration also available.

Additionally, a limited edition K-Royal Palaces PASS will be available (4,000 passes in total), allowing unlimited visits to Seoul’s four major palaces, Gyeonghuigung and Jongmyo Shrine during the fall festival. This PASS includes one nighttime admission to Gyeongbokgung during the festival.

Next year, promotional videos will feature not only the festival but also a wider range of Korean heritage sites, to be broadcast through major outdoor billboards in downtown Seoul (Jung-gu and Jongno-gu).

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center of the Korea Heritage Service hopes the K-Royal Culture Festival will offer a valuable opportunity for both Korean and international visitors to enjoy and gain a deeper understanding of the history and traditions embedded in Korean heritage.
