국가유산청 궁능유적본부 세종대왕유적관리소(소장 이재원)는 오는 9월 8일부터 9월 27일까지 세종대왕역사문화관(경기 여주시)에서 제1회 초대작가전 「집현전 전람회」를 개최한다.
이번 전시는 한글을 주제로 한 초대작가전으로 전각작가 김내혜의 대표작 24점을 선보인다. 관람객들은 이번 전시회를 통해서 '한글 전각'의 독특한 조형미와 함께, 그 속에 담겨있는 뛰어난 예술성에 공감하게 된다. 특히, 이번 전시에서 선보이는 모든 작품은 현재 고갈 위기에 놓인 우리나라의 대표 석재인 해남석과 단양석에 새겨진 것으로 의미를 더한다. * 전각: 나무·돌·금속·옥 따위에 글자를 새겨 넣는 것으로 명, 청대에 이르러 예술의 한 분야로 발전하였고, 이때 사용하는 글자가 전서(篆書)였기 때문에 전각(篆刻)이라고 함
전시는 '우리의 글', '우리의 문학', '우리의 독립의지'라는 대주제 아래, '훈민정음 판본체', '세종대왕과 팔 학사', '고전시가', '백석과 김소월', '나의 소원'의 5개 부문으로 나누어진다.
▲ '훈민정음 판본체'에서는 <훈민정음 언해 서문>, <용비어천가>, <월인천강지곡> 등 판본 유산이 새겨진 작품과, 훈민정음 해례본의 자모음을 1센티미터 크기의 해남석에 양각으로 새긴 후 해남석 원석에 흩뿌리듯 불규칙하게 붙인 <한글은 땅을 닮았다>, 한글 홑자 2,350자를 작은 해남석 2,350개에 새긴 후 한지에 붙인 대형작품 <어린 백성>, 용비어천가 2장을 점자로 양각한 <점자 용비어천가> 등이 전시된다. 이 중 <한글은 땅을 닮았다>와 세종대왕의 애민정신을 표현한 <어린 백성>은 이번 전시의 대표 작품들이다. ▲ '세종대왕과 팔 학사'에서는 세종대왕과 집현전 팔 학사의 이름이 새겨진 인장이 찍힌 한지 9장이 돌 물그릇 위에 뜬다. ▲ '고전시가'에서는 <정석가>(고려가요), <상춘곡>(가사 / 정극인, 1401~1481), <장진주사>(시조 / 정철, 1536~1594), <춘면곡>(조선후기 평민가사) 등이 4점의 전각작품으로 새롭게 태어난다. ▲ '백석과 김소월'에서는 오늘날까지 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 시인 백석, 김소월의 작품을 새겨낸 <가즈랑집>(백석 작), <고야(古夜)>(백석 작), 옛늬야기(김소월 작) 등 3점이 전시된다. 마지막으로 ▲ '나의 소원'에서는 김구 선생이 쓴 「나의 소원」과 1919년 2월 간도에서 애국부인회가 선포한 「대한독립여자선언서」 전문이 전시된다. * 집현전 팔 학사의 인장 : 정인지, 최항, 박팽년, 신숙주, 성삼문, 강희안, 이개, 이선로 등 8인의 인장 * 대한독립여자선언서 : 1919년 2월 간도에서 애국부인회가 선포한 대한독립선언문
김내혜 작가는 "이번 전시를 통해 한글전각이라는 새로운 분야를 소개하고, 그동안 동양예술의 정수라고 불리던 전각세계에 한글의 시대가 오고 있음을 알리고 싶다"고 소감을 전했다.
전시는 기간 내 오전 9시부터 오후 5시까지 세종대왕역사문화관을 방문하는 관람객이라면 누구나 관람할 수 있다. 단, 월요일은 휴관일이다.
궁능유적본부 세종대왕유적관리소는 앞으로 '세종대왕역사문화관 초대작가전'을 왕릉을 활용한 또 하나의 문화축전으로 정착시켜 지역민들에게 고품격 문화향유 기회를 제공해 나가는 적극행정을 이어갈 것이다.
The Historic Site of King Sejong Management Office (Director Lee Jae-won) of the Korean Heritage Service Royal Palaces and Tombs Center, will hold its first Invitational Artist Exhibition, 'Jiphyeonjeon Exhibition' from September 8 to 27 at the History and Culture Museum of King Sejong in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do.
Dedicated to the theme of Hangeul, the exhibition presents 24 representative works by seal engraving artist, Kim Nae-hye. Through the exhibition, visitors will be invited to move beyond the long-established notion that 'seal engraving means Chinese characters' and discover the distinctive visual beauty of Hangeul seal engraving, while appreciating the remarkable artistic qualities inherent in the Korean alphabet.
The works are organized into five sections: 'Hunminjeongeum Woodblock Typeface', 'King Sejong and the Eight Scholars', 'Classical Korean Poetry', 'Baek Sok and Kim Sowol' and 'My Wish'.
1. Hunminjeongeum Woodblock Typeface This section features works engraved with texts from Korea's woodblock-print heritage, including the Preface to the Korean Translation of Hunminjeongeum, Yongbieocheonga (Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven), and Worincheongangjigok (Songs of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers).
Among the works is 'Hangeul Resembles the Earth', in which the consonants and vowels from the Hunminjeongeum Haerye are individually carved in relief on one-centimeter pieces of Haenam stone and then irregularly scattered across a natural slab of the same stone.
Another large-scale work, 'The Common People', consists of 2,350 individual Hangeul characters, each engraved on a small piece of Haenam stone and mounted on hanji, traditional Korean paper. Also on display is Yongbieocheonga in Braille, in which the second canto of Yongbieocheonga is rendered in raised Braille.
Among these, 'Hangul Resembles the Earth' and 'The Common People'—the latter expressing King Sejong's profound compassion for his people—are representative works of the exhibition.
2. King Sejong and the Eight Scholars In this section, nine sheets of hanji, bearing seal impressions of the names of King Sejong and eight scholars of Jiphyeonjeon are displayed floating upon a stone water basin.
The eight scholars are Jeong In-ji, Choe Hang, Park Paeng-nyeon, Shin Suk-ju, Seong Sam-mun, Gang Hui-an, Yi Gae, and Yi Seon-ro.
3. Classical Korean Poetry Four works of classical Korean poetry are given new life through seal engraving. They include Jeongseokga, a song from the Goryeo period; Sangchungok by Jeong Geuk-in (1401–1481); Jangjinjusa by Jeong Cheol (1536–1594); and Chunmyeongok, a popular gasa poem from the late Joseon period.
4. Baek Sok and Kim Sowol This section presents three works based on poems by Baek Seok and Kim Sowol, two of Korea's most beloved modern poets, both active during the Japanese colonial period.
The works include 'Gajirangjip' and 'Goya(Old night)' by Baek Sok, and 'An Old Tale' by Kim Sowol.
5. My Wish The final section, &'My Wish' presents the complete texts of Kim Gu's My Wish and the Korean Women's Declaration of Independence, proclaimed by the Patriotic Women's Association in Gando in February 1919, each engraved on Haenam stone.
All the works in the exhibition are Hangeul seal engravings carved primarily in Haenam stone and Danyang stone, Korean stones that are now at risk of becoming depleted. The materials themselves add further meaning to the exhibition's central themes: 'our writing', 'our literature', and 'our will for independence'.
Invited artist Kim Nae-hye said: Through this exhibition, I hope to introduce the public, who are more familiar with seal engraving in Chinese characters, to the new concept and genre of Hangeul seal engraving. I also hope to show that a new era of Hangeul is emerging in the world of seal engraving, long regarded as one of the quintessential forms of East Asian arts.
The exhibition is open free of charge to all visitors to the History and Culture Museum of King Sejong during the exhibition period. Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.
The Historic Site of King Sejong Management Office of Korea Heritage Service Royal Palaces and Tomb Center plans to continue holding an invitational artist exhibition each year, providing local communities with greater opportunities to enjoy high-quality cultural experiences and establishing the King Sejong History and Culture Center Invitational Artist Exhibition as a distinctive annual cultural celebration.
