Good evening, I am Kang Jung-ai, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea.
<찰스 3세> 국왕님의 탄신을 축하하고 141년을 이어온 대한민국과 영국의 우정을 더욱 돈독히 하는 이 자리에 대한민국 정부 대표로 참석해 축하의 말씀을 드리게 되어 매우 뜻깊고 기쁘게 생각합니다.
It is my great pleasure to join you this evening to congratulate His Majesty the King on his birthday and deliver a congratulatory remark on behalf of the Korean Government, and also to celebrate the relationship between Korea and the UK which marks 141st anniversary of the diplomatic ties this year.
행사를 준비해주신 <콜린 크룩스> 주한영국대사님, 그리고 자리를 빛내주신 참석자 여러분께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
First, I would like to thank H.E. Ambassador Colin Crooks for bringing us together today, and thank all the distinguished guests.
대한민국과 영국의 인연은 141년 전인 1883년 수호통상조약을 체결하며 시작되었고 다양한 분야에서 활발하게 교류하며 굳건한 우정을 쌓아왔습니다.
As you know, the ties between our two nations were forged 141 years ago with the establishment of Korea-UK Treaty of 1883. Since then, our friendship have been cultivated in various fields.
1900년대 초, 영국의 언론인 <어네스트 베델> 선생님은 ‘대한매일신보’를 창간하며 우리나라의 독립과 언론의 자유를 위해 힘쓰셨습니다.
선생의 위대한 용기를 기리기 위해 우리 정부는 건국훈장을 추서하였고 많은 국민들이 <베델> 선생님의 고귀한 헌신을 기억하고 있습니다.
In the early 1900s, a British journalist, Ernest Bethell, founded a newspaper ‘The Korea Daily News’, advocating for Korean Independence and freedom of speech. In recognition of his commitment, the Korean Government conferred the National Foundation Medal on Mr. Bethell, and many of us still remember his dedication.
1950년에는 영국의 젊은이들이 공산화의 위기에 처한 대한민국을 지키기 위해 한국전쟁에 뛰어들었습니다.
8만 1천여 명의 영국군은 한 번도 만난 적 없는 국민을 위해 용감하게 싸웠습니다.
Later in 1950, numerous British young soldiers came to Korea to defend the country which was faced with the crisis of communism. Around 81,000 British soldiers fought bravely to save people they had never met before.
임진강 전투에서 심한 부상을 입고 영국으로 후송됐던 <윌리엄 스피크먼> 용사님은 3개월 만에 다시 한국으로 돌아와서 전투를 계속했습니다.
한？영 양국에서 최고의 무공훈장을 수여받은 <스피크먼> 용사님은 대한민국을 늘 제2의 모국으로 여겼고, 2019년 유언대로 부산 유엔기념공원에 영면하셨습니다.
One of them is Mr. William Speakman, who was severely wounded during the Battle of Imjin River and had to return home. But just in 3 months, he came back and returned to his unit in the battlefields. Mr. Speakman is the one who was presented the highest military order by both Korean and U.K. governments. He used to say Korea was his second home, and left his wish to be buried in Korea. In 2019, he was laid to rest in the UNMCK in Busan.
<윌리엄 스피크먼> 용사님의 놀라운 투혼과 대한민국에 대한 진심어린 사랑을 우리는 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다.
We will never forget Mr. Speakman’s indomitable spirit and sincere love for Korea.
한국전 참전용사로서 영국의 유명 오디션 프로그램에서 우승한 <콜린 태커리>님은 작년 한국을 방문해 한국의 민요 아리랑을 열창하여 많은 사람들에게 감동을 주었습니다.
작년 말 영국 현충일 행사에도 참석한 그는 한국어로 아리랑을 다시 열창하며 한국전쟁이 더 이상 잊힌 전쟁이 되지 않도록 힘쓰고 있습니다.
Another British veteran, Mr. Colin Thackery, who is the winner of British Got Talent Show, revisited Korea last year and gave a performance, singing ‘Arirang’, a Korean folk song. It made a deep impression on the audience.
Late last year at the Festival of Remembrance in London, Mr. Thackery gave another Arirang performance. As such, he is committed to ensuring the Korean War is never forgotten.
<콜린 태커리> 용사님의 바람처럼 한국전쟁은 잊힌 전쟁이 아니라 승리한 전쟁이고, 이 땅의 자유와 평화를 지켜낸 위대한 전쟁으로 남을 것입니다.
Just as he hopes, the Korean War will not be forgotten, but remembered as a victorious struggle in defense of peace and freedom.
대한민국은 어려울 때 도움의 손길을 내밀어 준 <베델> 선생님, <스피크먼>, <태커리> 용사님, 그리고 고국을 떠나 머나먼 나라 대한민국을 위해 싸워준 참전용사들을 영원히 기억할 것입니다.
The Republic of Korea will always remember British people including Mr. Bethelle, Mr. Speakman, and Mr. Thackery who stood alongside Korea during the crises.
대한민국을 되찾고 지키기 위해 영국과 함께했던 지난 역사를 계승하여 대한민국과 영국 간의 우정과 동반자 관계를 더욱 확고하게 다져 나가겠습니다.
We will make sure to bolster friendship and partnership by carrying forward our shared history where our both nations together restored and defended the Republic of Korea.
<찰스 3세> 국왕님의 탄신을 다시 한번 축하드리며, 자리에 함께하신 모든 분들의 건강과 행복을 기원합니다.
