국가유산청 궁능유적본부(본부장 이재필)는 고양 서오릉 역사문화관의 내부 정비와 전시 개편을 완료하고 오는 10월 1일부터 새롭게 문을 연다.
* 서오릉(西五陵): 경기 고양시에 있는 조선 왕실 무덤군으로 경릉(추존 덕종·소혜왕후), 익릉(인경왕후), 창릉(예종, 안순왕후), 명릉(숙종·인현왕후·인원왕후), 홍릉(정성왕후), 순창원(순회세자, 공회빈), 수경원(영빈 이씨), 대빈묘(옥산부대빈 장씨)로 조성되어 있음.

이번에 개편된 역사문화관에서는 서오릉 알아보기, 왕의 능행, 서오릉 숲, 세계유산 조선왕릉 알아보기의 4개 주제로 구성된 전시가 진행된다. 특히, 조선시대 능행에 대한 새로운 연구 성과와 왕릉의 숲을 주제로 한 감각적인 전시가 더해졌다.
* 능행(陵行): 조선시대 국왕이 선대 왕이나 왕비의 능에 제사를 지내거나 참배하기 위해 행차하는 일

먼저, ▲ 고양 서오릉 알아보기에서는 서오릉이 품고 있는 역사·문화적 가치를 두루 살펴볼 수 있다. 서오릉 내 각 능의 배치를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 배치도 모형과 각 능의 능주, 공간별 특징 및 조성 역사를 무인안내기(키오스크)를 통해 상세히 알아볼 수 있다. 또한, 1970년도에 서오릉으로 이장된 영빈 이씨의 무덤인 수경원 터에서 출토된 ‘영빈이씨 명기’를 복제품으로 전시하여 조선시대 왕실 부장품의 일면도 볼 수 있다.

▲ 왕의 능행에서는 궁능유적본부에서 진행한 조선시대 능행 연구 성과의 일부를 살펴볼 수 있다. 조선부터 대한제국기까지 535년 동안 총 939회의 능행이 있었는데, 그중에서도 서오릉은 구리 동구릉에 이어 역대 왕들이 가장 많이 능행한 곳이다. 특히, 영조는 아버지인 숙종의 명릉이 있는 서오릉에 가장 많이 행차한 왕이다. 이곳에서는 영상을 통해 영조의 서오릉 능행로를 알아보고, 능행에 많이 연주되었던 ‘대취타’ 음악을 들어볼 수 있다.

▲ 서오릉 숲에서는 그동안 조선왕릉 역사문화관에서 다루지 않았던 왕릉의 숲에 대해 다양한 전시 매체를 활용해 살펴볼 수 있다. 서오릉 숲의 조성부터 현재, 그리고 미래 가치를 살펴본 뒤, 큰소쩍새의 시선에서 바라본 서오릉 숲과 새소리, 빗소리, 풀벌레소리 등 자연의 소리들을 담은 실감형소리(ASMR) 영상을 관람하며 서오릉의 자연을 감각적으로 느낄 수 있다. 서오릉에 서식하는 다양하고 희귀한 동식물들을 체험 놀이를 통해 배워 볼 수 있으며, 조선시대에 왕릉 숲을 어떻게 조성하고 관리했는지에 대해 옛 문헌 기록을 통해 알아 볼 수도 있다.

▲ 세계유산 조선왕릉 알아보기에서는 세계유산 「조선왕릉」에 대해 폭넓게 알아볼 수 있도록 구성했다. 세계유산으로서 「조선왕릉」의 가치와 40기 왕릉의 전체 정보를 무인안내기(키오스크)를 통해 상세히 찾아볼 수 있다.

국가유산청 궁능유적본부는 이번에 재개관한 고양 서오릉을 비롯한 조선왕릉 역사문화관을 찾는 방문객들이 휴식과 함께 조선왕릉의 가치를 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 앞으로도 전시 콘텐츠의 내실화를 위해 더욱 노력할 예정이다.

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center, led by Director Lee Jae-phil, under the Korea Heritage Service has completed a comprehensive∨reinterpretation of the West Five Royal Tombs History Center in Goyang. The Center will reopen to the public on October 1.

The West Five Royal Tombs, the second largest group of Joseon royal tombs after the East Nine Royal Tombs in Guri, encompass five neung, two won, and one myo, representing all varieties of royal tombs. This site offers a unique glimpse into the evolution of royal tomb architecture from the 15th to the 18th century. Despite rapid urbanization, the historic forest surrounding the West Five Royal Tombs has endured as a valuable ecological asset. The West Five Royal Tombs are a cherished space that integrates tangible, intangible, and natural heritage value, including the final resting places of royal family members, ongoing memorial ceremonies that preserve cultural traditions, and a thriving forest ecosystem that contributes to pristine air quality.

The newly revamped West Five Royal Tombs History Center in Goyang now presents exhibits in four main categories: Discovering the West Five Royal Tombs, Royal Tomb Visits, Forests of the West Five Royal Tombs, and Joseon Royal Tombs as a World Heritage Site. This thematic approach represents a significant shift from the previous, more descriptive exhibition, which lacked a clear focus. The new displays incorporate recent research findings on the neunghaeng tradition of the Joseon Dynasty and the ecological significance of the West Five Royal Tombs' forests.

▲The first section, Discovering the West Five Royal Tombs,exploresthe historical and cultural significance of the West Five Royal Tombs, highlighting the occupants and distinctive features of each royal tomb. It also explores the varied types of royal tombs in the site―neung, won, and myo, and showcases burial goods discovered in the Sugyeongwon Royal Tomb. Key exhibit features include a comprehensive model illustrating the layout of the entire complex, interactive kiosks detailing the occupants, spatial characteristics, and construction history of each tomb. The exhibit also features a replica of the funerary object of Yeongbin of the Yi Clan, excavated from the Sugyeongwon Royal Tomb site before its 1970 relocation, offering insights into Joseon Dynasty royal burial goods.

▲The Royal Tomb Visits section presents findings from the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's research on Joseon Dynasty neunghaeng*. Throughout the 535-year period from the Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire, a total of 939 neunghaeng took place. Among royal burial sites, the West Five Royal Tombs recorded the second highest number of royal visits, following the East Nine Royal Tombs in Guri. King Yeongjo, whose father King Sukjong is interred at∨Myeongneung, made the most visits to this site. Visitors can enjoy a video presentation that traces King Yeongjo's neunghaeng route to the West Five Royal Tombs, accompanied by "Daechwita" music traditionally played during these royal processions.
* Neunghaeng(陵行): Joseon Dynasty kings visited the tombs of their predecessors to perform ancestral rites and pay respects to deceased monarchs and queens.

▲The Forests of the West Five Royal Tombs section explores the royal tomb forests, a subject not previously addressed at the History Centers at the Joseon royal tombs, using various exhibition media. Visitors can learn about the creation, present state, and future value of these forests, and experience their unique ecology from the perspective of a Japanese scops owl through videos and ASMR. A hands-on activity program allows visitors to discover the diverse and rare flora and fauna of the forests, while historical documents reveal how the royal tombs were established and managed during the Joseon Dynasty.

▲The Joseon Royal Tombs as a World Heritage Site section presents a comprehensive overview of the Joseon Royal Tombs' UNESCO World Heritage. An interactive kiosk provides detailed information about their significance in terms of heritage and complete data on all 40 royal tombs.

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center of the Korea Heritage Service will continue to enhance exhibition content, ensuring that visitors to the History Centers of the Joseon royal tombs can fully appreciate the sites' significance while enjoying a relaxing experience.
