국가유산청(청장 최응천)은 오는 4월 20일, 5년간의 대규모 수리를 마친 종묘 정전을 공개하고, 창덕궁에 임시로 모셨던 조선 왕과 왕비의 신주들을 본래의 자리로 다시 모시는 '종묘 정전 환안제 및 준공기념식'을 개최한다.

5년에 걸친 대규모 수리 마치고 돌아오는 종묘 정전
종묘 정전은 1395년 태조 이성계가 창건한 이래 600년이 넘도록 왕실 제례가 이어져 온 한국 전통 건축의 정수로 1985년 국보로 지정되었다. 그러나 구조적 균열, 기와 탈락, 목재의 노후화 문제가 지속 확인되면서 국가유산청은 2020년부터 2025년까지 5년에 걸쳐 수리를 진행했다. 이번 수리는 1991년 이후 약 30년 만에 이뤄진 대대적인 수리로, 품격 있는 정전의 모습을 회복하기 위하여 정전 앞 시멘트 모르타르를 제거하고 수제 전돌을 깔았으며, 공장제 기와를 모두 걷어낸 뒤 수제 기와로 교체하는 등 전통 건축의 기법과 재료를 토대로 하되, 현대 과학 기술을 접목하여 역사적, 기술적, 미학적 가치를 더욱 강화했다. 특히, 수리 과정에서 연륜연대조사를 통해 광해군 대의 목재를 확인하는 등 종묘 정전의 건축사적 가치를 실증적으로 입증할 수 있는 계기도 마련할 수 있었다.

1,100여 명 대규모 환안 행렬과 광화문 월대 옆 전통 연희 공연
국가유산청은 종묘 정전 수리가 완료됨에 따라 창덕궁 구(舊)선원전에 2021년부터 임시 봉안(종묘 정전 수리기간: '20~'25)했던 신주를 다시 제자리로 모셔오는 환안제를 4월 20일 오후 2시, 창덕궁 금호문 앞에서 시작한다. 155년 만에 이루어지는 이번 환안제에서는 광화문과 세종대로, 종로를 거쳐 종묘까지 약 3.5km 구간을 행진하며, 사전 모집한 200명의 시민 행렬단을 비롯해 총 1,100명이 참여하는 대규모 환안 행렬이 펼쳐진다.
국가유산청이 이번 환안제를 위해 『종묘영녕전증수도감의궤』를 바탕으로 장인들과 특별히 제작한 신여, 신연, 향용정을 포함해 전국에서 확보한 총 28기의 가마가 도심 한복판을 가로지르는 보기 드문 장관이 펼쳐질 것이다.

같은 날 오후 2시부터 3시까지는 경복궁 광화문 월대 옆 잔디밭에서 풍물놀이, 줄타기, 탈춤, 사자춤 등 전통 연희 공연이 함께 열릴 예정이다.

수리 후 첫 선 보이는 종묘정전에서 고유제와 야간 기념 공연
환안 행렬이 종묘에 도착한 이후인 오후 6시 30분부터는 수리를 마치고 첫 공개되는 종묘 정전에서 고유제와 준공기념식이 진행된다. 고유제는 (사)전주이씨대동종약원 주관으로 약 200여 명이 참여하여 전통 절차에 따라 봉행되며, 이어지는 준공기념식에서는 수리 과정을 담은 영상 상영, 종묘 정전 월대 위에서 외벽 영상(미디어 파사드)과 함께 약 60명의 무용수가 참여하는 특별 공연이 펼쳐져 오래도록 기억될 감동을 전할 것이다.

국가유산청은 국민과 함께 하는 이번 환안제를 통해 수리를 마치고 돌아온 종묘 정전의 새로운 출발을 알리고, 600년을 이어온 제례 전통이 다시 재현되는 오늘이, 전통과 현재, 그리고 미래를 잇는 소중한 연결고리가 되기를 기대한다.

The Korea Heritage Service on April 20 will unveil the main hall of Jongmyo Shrine - which underwent five years of large-scale restoration - and hold ceremonies to mark the return of ancestral tablets of Joseon kings and queens as well as the completion of the restoration. The tablets had been temporarily kept at the Changdeokgung palace during the restoration.

Main Hall of Jongmyo Shrine Reopens after Five Years of Large-scale Restoration
The main hall of Jongmyo Shrinewas constructed in 1395 according to the vision of King Taejo, the founding king of Joseon Dynasty. For 600 years since then, it was where jerye, or the royal ancestral ritual, took place. Considered the epitome of traditional Korean architecture, it was designated a National Treasure in 1985.

However, issues like structural cracks, falling of rooftiles and deterioration of the wood have surfaced repeatedly over the years. This led the Korea Heritage Service to conduct a major restoration from 2020 to 2025.Given that the last time the structure underwent restoration was in 1991, it marked the first restoration about 30 years. It was also an extensive project aimed at helping the structure regain its former glory.

At the front of the main hall, cement mortar was replaced with handmade stone pieces. Factory-made rooftiles have also been removed and handmade rooftiles took their place. While maintaining the traditional artistry and materials, the restoration also embraced modern scientific technology in hopes of enhancing the structure's historical, technical and aesthetic value. It is also worth noting that during the restoration, dendrochronology, or annual ring dating, found wood from King Gwanghaegun's reign, once again proving the importance of the structure in Korea's architectural history.

Large-scale Homecoming Parade with 1,100 People and Traditional Show near Gwanghwamun Woldae
With the completion of the restoration of the main hall of Jongmyo Shrine, the ancestral tablets- that have been temporarily kept at the old Seonwonjeon Hall of Changdeokgung Palace since 2021 - will return home at last. The long-awaited homecoming will be celebrated through a reenactment of royal procession and ritual, taking place for the first time in 155 years. And at 2 pm on April 20, the procession will commence from the Geumhomun Gate of Changdeokgung Palace. About 1,100 people- including 200 citizens who have been mobilized by Korea Heritage Service in advance- will march in a parade about 3.5-kilometer route to Jongmyo, through Gwanghwamun, SeojongDaero and Jongno.

 
For the procession, the Korea Heritage Service has recreated with artisans sinyeo (palanquin for royal ancestral tablets, to be used outside palace); sinyeon (palanquin for royal ancestral tablets, to be used inside palace); and hyangyongjeong (palanquin for incense burner and case), based on uigwe, or the historical documents that detail protocols for royal ceremonies of the Joseon, related to Jongmyo. A total of 28 palanquin specially tasked with transporting ancestral tablets that are recreated based on historical research will add to the spectacle the procession will bring to the heart of Seoul.

Also on 20 April between 2 and 3 in the afternoon, there will be traditional performances near the Gwanghwamun Woldae (or elevated platform in front of Gwanghwamun). They will include pungmulnori (traditional Korean percussion music and dance), jultagi (traditional Korean tightrope walking), talchum (traditional Korean mask dance), and sajachum (traditional Korean lion dance).

Special Ritual and Night-time Performances at Main Hall of Jongmyo to Conclude Special Day
At 6:30 in the evening, after the procession arrives at Jongmyo, there will be special ritual and a ceremony marking the completion of the restoration. The ritual - to be conducted according to traditional protocols -will be presided over by the Jeonju Yi clan and attended by about 200 people. A ceremony marking the completion of the restoration will follow wherea video that shows the five-year journey of the restoration will be shown. There will also be a media facade on Jongmyo Woldae as well as special performance of about 60 dancers.

Through these events, the Korea Heritage Service wishes to celebrate a new chapter in the history of the main hall of Jongmyo, and help people reflect on the rare and special intersection between the past, the present and the future through reenactments of the jerye tradition that survived the test of time for more than 600 years.
