국가유산청 국립문화유산연구원(원장 임종덕)은 한국 불교미술의 정수인 괘불(掛佛)의 지역적 특성과 예술성을 심층적으로 다룬 영문 학술총서 『The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul』 총 4권 전집을 완간하였다.

앞서 국립문화유산연구원은 현재 전해지는 120여 점의 괘불 가운데 국보·보물로 지정된 63점에 대해 2022년부터 실시한 심층 조사와 미술사적 분석 결과를 지역별로 정리하여 총 4권의 국문판 『한국 괘불의 미』(4권, 2022~2024)를 발간한 바 있으며, 2023년 영문판인 『The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul』 1편을 발간한 데 이어, 이번에 2~4편을 선보이게 되었다.

괘불은 '걸개에 거는 불화'를 말하는데, 사찰의 야외 의식을 위해 제작된 대형 불화이다. 길이가 약 5~14m에 달하는 압도적인 규모와 독창적인 도상은 다른 나라의 불화에서는 찾아보기 어려운 우리나라만의 독창성과 예술성을 보여준다.

2023년에 발간한 1권(경상지역)에서는 조선 후기에 괘불이 가장 활발하게 제작된 경상지역의 괘불 26점을 소개했다. 경상지역 괘불에는 꽃비가 내리듯 꽃을 뿌려서 부처를 공양하는 장면이 나타나거나, 괘불 화면 테두리에 범자(梵字, 산스크리트어 표기 문자)를 원문(圓文) 형태로 배치하는 등의 특징이 있다.

이번에 나온 2권(전라지역)에는 15점의 괘불과 초본 1점이 실렸다. 전라지역에는 현존하는 가장 이른 시기 괘불인 <죽림사 세존 괘불탱> (1622)을 비롯하여 초창기 괘불들이 전하고 있다. 특히, 『오종범음집』에 입각한 괘불 작품들이 '천신–의겸–색민' 거장들에 의해 18세기 전라지역에서 활발히 제작된 점이 특징이다. 불보살의 몸과 눈동자 등에 범자를 적어 생명력을 부여하는 섬세한 표현은 종교 의식에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로 이루어진 것이다.

3권(충청지역)에는 15점의 충청지역 괘불에 대한 내용이 담겨 있다. 충청 지역은 17세기의 작품이 다른 지역보다 많은데, 많은 인물들을 그린 군도(群圖) 형식의 석가모니 괘불이 많아서, 초창기 괘불이 부처님을 단독으로 묘사한 독존도(獨尊圖)보다는 군도 형식으로 제작되었을 가능성을 보여준다. 화려한 보관과 장신구를 착용한 보살형의 장엄신(莊嚴身)도 확인할 수 있는데, 지역적인 특색이 반영된 창의적인 도상으로 주목된다.

4권(서울·경기지역)에는 국보와 보물로 지정되어 있는 서울·경기지역 괘불 6점을 수록하였다. 20세기 전반까지 제작된 120여 점의 괘불 가운데 현재 41점이 서울·경기지역에 남아 있다. 억불정책으로 조선 전기에 서울·경기지역의 괘불 조성은 활발하지 못했으나, 19세기 이후에는 왕실 발원 불화의 전통을 계승한 수준 높은 괘불이 활발히 조성되었다. 괘불을 조성할 수 있는 종교적, 재정적 기반이 마련되고 화원(畵員)들이 왕실 발원 괘불의 제작에 참여하면서, 이후 근대기 괘불 양식을 주도해 나가게 된다.

영문 학술총서 『The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul』은 국외의 한국학 연구기관을 중심으로 배포되며, 국립문화유산연구원 국가유산 지식이음 누리집에서 누구나 열람할 수 있다. 또한 누리집 내 '괘불 갤러리'에서 국가지정 괘불의 고화질 사진과 관련 정보를 확인할 수 있으며, 2026년에는 영문 서비스도 실시할 예정으로 괘불에 대한 국제적 관심을 높이고, 관련 연구 기반을 조성하는 데 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Director General: Lim, Jong-Deock; hereafter, the NRICH), an affiliate of Korea Heritage Service, has completed the publication of the English edition of the four-volume series The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul. The series explores the regional characteristics and artistry found in gwaebul paintings—a quintessential form of Korean Buddhist art.

This English-language academic series is designed to help international readers to better understand the originality and significance of Korean gwaebul paintings. It is based on the Korean edition, which was published in four volumes from 2022 to 2024, building upon the in-depth surveys and art historical analyses of Korean gwaebul conducted since 2022.


A gwaebul, in Korean literally meaning a Buddhist painting hung from a rack, is a large-scale artwork intended for outdoor rituals at temples. Their overwhelming size of approximately five to fourteen meters in length and their inventive iconography—two features uncommon in Buddhist paintings elsewhere—demonstrate distinctive regional artistry.

Among the 120 surviving gwaebul, sixty-three pieces designated as national treasures or treasures are featured across four volumes organized by region.
Volume I introduces twenty-six gwaebul paintings from the Gyeongsang-do Province area, the region where gwaebul production was most active during the late Joseon period. One notable motif in the local gwaebul is the depiction of making offerings to the Buddha by scattering flowers to resemble a flower rain. Another characteristic of gwaebul from this region is the placement of Sanskrit characters inside circles along the edges of the paintings.


Volume II contains fifteen gwaebul paintings and a gwaebul draft from Jeolla-do Province. Some very early gwaebul paintings have survived in this region, including the earliest known example, The Shakyamuni Buddha Gwaebul at Jungnimsa Temple (1622). Notably, a number of gwaebul were created there in the eighteenth century by the master monk-painters Cheonsin, Uigyeom, and Saekmin based on Ojongbeomeumjip (五種梵音集, Collection of the Five Kinds of Sanskrit Sounds), a Buddhist ritual manual published in the prior century. The meticulous act of enlivening Buddhas and Bodhisattvas by inscribing Sanskrit characters on their eyes and bodies was practiced based on a deep understanding of Buddhist rituals.


Volume III features fifteen gwaebul paintings from Chungcheong-do Province, where more seventeenth-century examples are found than in any other region. Many of them depict a seated Shakyamuni Buddha surrounded by multiple figures arranged in groups, suggesting a possibility that early gwaebul may have been produced in a group-image format rather than as solitary images. In the seventeenth-century gwaebul from this region, Bodhisattva-type Buddhas appear with ornately adorned bodies wearing embellished crowns and accessories. This creative iconography is noteworthy as a reflection of the region's local characteristics.


Volume IV presents six gwaebul paintings from Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province. Among the 120 known gwaebul created by the end of the first half of the twentieth century, forty-one are found in this region. Due to a policy of suppressing Buddhism, gwaebul production in this region was largely dormant during the early Joseon period. However, in and after the nineteenth century, high-quality gwaebul influenced by the tradition of Buddhist paintings commissioned by the royal court were actively produced there. With their religious and financial foundation for supporting gwaebul production and the participation of court painters in works commissioned by the royal court, gwaebul paintings from Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province came to define the style of modern-era gwaebul .

The English-language academic series The Beauty of Korean Gwaebul will be distributed primarily to overseas research institutions specializing in Korean studies. It is also accessible to the general public through the NRICH's website. Moreover, high-resolution photos of state-designated gwaebul and related information are provided in the Gwaebul Gallery on this website, and will be made available with accompanying English text in 2026. These efforts are expected to significantly enhance international interest in gwaebul and build a solid foundation for related research.
