국가유산청(청장 최응천)은 국가유산진흥원(원장 최영창), 종묘대제봉행위원회(위원장 이귀남/종묘제례보존회·종묘제례악보존회)와 오는 5월 4일 오후 2시 종묘(서울 종로구)에서 <2025년 종묘대제>를 봉행한다.

「종묘대제(宗廟大祭)」는 왕실의 품격 높은 의례와 무용, 음악이 어우러진 종합적인 의례로, 그 문화적 가치를 인정받아 2001년 유네스코 인류무형유산 대표목록으로 등재되었다. 국조오례의(國朝五禮儀) 중 길례(吉禮)에 속하며, 국왕이 직접 거행하는 가장 큰 규모의 제사이다. 1969년 복원되어 현재까지 그 명맥을 이어오고 있으며, 매년 5월 첫 번째 일요일에 유교의 예법과 절차를 엄격히 지켜 웅장하고 엄숙한 의식으로 거행된다.

국가유산청은 지난 2020년부터 2025년까지 5년간의 종묘 정전의 대규모 수리를 완료하였으며, 오는 4월 20일 창덕궁 구(舊)선원전에 2021년부터 임시 봉안했던 신주를 다시 제자리로 모셔오는 환안제를 개최할 예정이다. 이에, <2025년 종묘대제>는 2019년 이후 6년 만에 일반인에게 공개되는 정전 제향이 진행된다는 점에서 더욱 주목을 끈다. 특히, 올해는 「종묘대제」의 국가무형유산 지정 50주년이자, 「종묘」의 유네스코 세계유산 등재 30주년으로 그 의미가 더욱 특별하다.

봉행 행사는 오전 10시 영녕전 제향을 시작으로, 경복궁 광화문에서 종묘까지 어가행렬이 이어지고, 오후 2시부터 정전 제향이 거행된다. 정전 제향은 사전 예약(선착순 400명)과 현장 접수(300명)를 통해 관람할 수 있으며, 예약은 18일 오후 2시부터 티켓링크(www.ticketlink.co.kr)를 통해 진행된다. 65세 이상, 장애인, 국가유공자에 한해 전화예약(☎1588-7890)도 병행한다. 영녕전과 정전 앞에 설치된 대형 화면을 통해 제향을 생중계하며, 유튜브를 통해서도 실시간으로 시청할 수 있다. 제향 이후에는 행사 당일 현장을 방문한 관람객이라면 누구나 자유롭게 정전 신실을 관람할 수 있다.

이외에도 국가유산청은 종묘의 유·무형유산을 더욱 다채롭게 즐길 수 있도록 11일간의 '종묘주간'(4.24.~5.4.)을 지정하여 다양한 체험 프로그램을 운영한다. 유네스코 인류무형유산 「종묘제례악」의 웅장하고 장엄한 아름다움을 느낄 수 있는 <종묘제례악 야간 공연>(4.24.~5.2.)을 비롯해, 제례 악기를 직접 연주해 볼 수 있는 <종묘제례악 체험관>, 제사상을 재현한 전시를 해설과 함께 관람할 수 있는 <신실재현 전시관>, 색칠된 엽서를 긁어 종묘 정전 그림을 확인할 수 있는 <정전 스크래치 엽서 체험관>이 운영된다. 각 체험관과 전시관은 4월 26일부터 5월 4일까지 종묘 향대청 인근에서 운영되며, 별도의 예매 없이 현장에서 자유롭게 참여할 수 있다.

국가유산청은 새롭게 단장한 종묘 정전에서 열리는 「종묘대제」를 통해 국내외 관람객에게 인류무형유산의 가치를 알리고, 다양한 한국 전통문화의 체험 기회를 제공하고자 하며, 앞으로도 대국민 무형유산 향유 기회 확대를 위한 적극행정을 실천할 것이다.

<2025 JongmyoDaeje>, Royal Ancestral Ritual in the Jongmyo Shrine, will be held at Jongmyo Shrine on Sunday, May 4 at 2:00 PM. The ceremony is hosted by the Korea Heritage Service (Administrator: Choi Eung-Chon), and organized by the Korea Heritage Agency (President: Choi Young-chang) in cooperation with JongmyoDaeje Steering committee(Chairman: Lee Gui-nam/the JongmyoJerye Preservation Association, and the JongmyoJeryeak Preservation Association).

combining solemn ancestral rituals with refined music and dance, was inscribed in 2001 on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for its outstanding cultural significance. This comprehensive rite is classified as a gillye, an auspicious rite under the GukjoOryeui (Five Rites of State)—and was traditionally the most prestigious and elaborate Confucian ritual, personally officiated by the king. Revived in 1969, it has since continued as a symbol of Korea's royal ceremonial heritage, and been held annually on the first Sunday of May, conducted with solemn dignity in strict accordance with Confucian ritual protocol.
* GukjoOryeui (National Five Rites Protocol): A state ritual manual compiled in 1474 that codifies the five major rites of the dynasty—gillye (auspicious rites), hyungnye (funerary rites), gunrye (military rites), binrye (reception rites), and garye (wedding rites).

As a uniquely Korean event that offers a rare opportunity to experience both tangible and intangible heritage, the ceremony holds particular significance this year, as it returns to the Main Hall of Jongmyo Shrine, following the completion of a six-year repair project. This year also marks two important anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the designation of JongmyoDaeje as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the 30th anniversary of Jongmyo Shrine's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage.

The event will begin at 10:00 AM with the ancestral rite at Yeongnyeongjeon Hall, followed by a royal procession(Eogahaengnyeol) from Gwanghwamun Gate at Gyeongbokgung Palace to Jongmyo Shrine.
At 2:00 PM, the main ancestral rite(Jehyang) will be held at the Main Hall of Jongmyo Shrine. Following the rite, the Sinsil(spirit chamber) inside the Main Hall, normally closed to the public, will be open for public viewing. Viewing of the main ancestral rite is available by advance reservation, which opens at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 18 through Ticketlink(www.ticketlink.co.kr) on a first-come, first-served basis. Any remaining seats will be allocated on-site on the day of the event, also on a first-come, first-served basis.

On the day of the event, the ancestral rite will be broadcast live on large screens installed at two locations within Jongmyo Shrine—in front of Yeongnyeongjeon Hall and the Main Hall. The entire ceremony will also be livestreamed on YouTube, providing global audiences with real-time access to the event.

In addition, the Korea Heritage Service and the Korea Heritage Agency will designate an 11-day "Jongmyo Week" (April 24 – May 4) to celebrate and promote the tangible and intangible heritage of Jongmyo Shrine. During this period, with the 2025 JongmyoDaeje, various cultural events and experience programs will be held, including the JongmyoJeryeak Night Performance.

At the JongmyoJeryeak Instruments Experience Booth, visitors can try playing traditional ceremonial instruments used in the ancestral rites. The Exhibition Booth of the Sinsil(spirit chamber) features a display of a traditional royal ritual table, accompanied by guided explanations. At the Jeongjeon Scratch Postcard Experience Booth, participants can experience scratching postcards depicting the Main Hall of Jongmyo Shrine. These experience programs will be available from April 26 to May 4, near Hyangdaecheong Office at Jongmyo Shrine. No advance reservation is required—visitors can participate on-site during the event period.
